About Kerry
Kerry Weiland is a member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team – Silver Medalist.
Kerry strongly believes that sports provide valuable life lessons. Throughout her life sports have played a huge role in shaping her confidence, character, drive and teaching her how to set and reach goals. She has taken her attitude toward sports and extended that philosophy into the rest of her life. The Olympics were a dream come true for Kerry and she is extremely excited to share her medal and experiences with everyone. She hopes to inspire others to live their dreams.
Kerry grew up on a farm outside of Anchorage, Alaska and started playing hockey at age 5.
Kerry's love for hockey began when her mother was searching for a sport for her older brother Andy to play. Kerry was intrigued by the players skating at the rink so her mother decided to sign her up for a team too. Kerry was a very shy child, but when she put on her hockey helmet, all of a sudden a very confident, outgoing and talent girl shone!
Needless to say, Kerry immediately excelled in hockey and was a member of the Varsity Boy's Hockey Team and became the first female to earn First Team All-Region honors in Alaskan history.
In 1998, Kerry accepted a full athletic scholarship to the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where she lettered all four years, was a two time All-American and an assistant captain. Kerry graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies and Sociology.
In 2002, Kerry was selected to the U.S. National Women's Ice Hockey Team. She trained for 3 years for her dream of being on the 2006 U.S. Olympic Team, but unfortunately was not selected. As a result, Kerry moved to Lyss, Switzerland to play hockey for the 2005-2006 season and to travel Europe.
In the fall of 2006, Kerry came back to North America and decided to move to Toronto, Canada to play at the high level required to pursue her dream of making an Olympic Team. Kerry would not let her fear of failing keep her from following her heart and ultimately her dream of representing her home state of Alaska and the United States of America on the world stage. En route to winning a Silver Medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Kerry also won two Gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Championships and a Silver Medal in 2007.
After years of intense training and perseverance, Kerry is extremely proud of her Olympic Silver Medal. Kerry thanks all her supporters, from her hometown of Palmer, Alaska all the way to Toronto, Canada and even overseas! Kerry looks forward to continuing to have an impact sharing her valuable experiences within the hockey community, with corporate partners, as well as volunteer endeavors.
